Late last month, Ubuntu 4.11 “Natty Narwhal” was released with the new Unity framework and it seems very foreign to me. It’s almost like a Frankenstein of Windows and Mac OSX, except with some freakish deformities. Here are some pros and cons:

Pros:

Very Pretty: This version is just much more sexier than Gnome and almost as sleek as KDE. I just wish they would ditch the brown already.

More User Friendly: You can be pretty stupid and still be able to operate this. Linux is not only for geeks now, grandma can now still use it.

Cons:

Customization of the dock: The Unity dock is not very customizable, which is unlike it’s Mac competitor. You can’t add folders to it, you can’t remove things from it by just dragging it, and you can’t see all the windows by right clicking it. It’s that bad.

User Friendliness: This is good if your computer illiterate, but if you been using Linux for a long time, it’s tedious and it takes a while to find what you’re looking for. It also seems like this would be better suited for a tablet, not a laptop or desktop computer, which is a big turnoff if you have a gigantic screen with oversized icons.

Dock: very big pain in the ass when you need to click something on the left side. I noticed that every time I click the ‘back’ button on my browser, I accidentally open my damn home folder. I could have it so I can click the top right hand corner, but that would make the access to the dock an even more of a pain in the ass. Again, you cannot change the position or the size of the dock. It has only one option and it’s whether or not you want it to appear if you hover to the side or hover in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

This is going to do it for this review. I’ll post updates when I find more features or find another issue. Want to try Ubuntu for yourself? It’s free to use and distribute! Click Here to download a copy!
